Man hit with £1,140 of fines and costs after doing a 'Tommy Robinson' over phone pin at Manchester Airport

ree

A MAN who did a Tommy Robinson - and refused to hand over his mobile phone pin to police at an international border - has been ordered to pay £1,140.

Tommy Robinson, real mame Stephen Lennon, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, November 4 2025, when he was found not guilty by Senior Magistrate Paul Goldspring of failing to comply with a requirement to provide the pin to his mobile phone at the Channel Tunnel.

Anyone can be required to handover the pin under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000, if they wish to explore if you may be involved in the commission or preparation of terrorism.

However, the detention and request is unlawful if there are not sufficient grounds to do so.

Robinson refused to hand over his pin saying the phone contained the confidential details of grooming gang victims for journalistic purposes.

Judge Goldspring found that the officer had chosen to detain him only based on his right wing beliefs, making it an unlawful stop.

The CPS will now be liable to pay Robinson's legal costs.

Umar Mehmood, 36, from Wensleydale Road, Bradford, West Yorkshire, appeared at the same court as Robinson the same day.

However, unlike Robinson, Mehmood pleaded guilty to one count of refusing to hand the pin to his phone at Manchester Airport on February 22 this year.

It is not clear why officers wanted to access his phone.

He initially denied the offence but changed his pleas to guilty on the day.

He was fined £600 with court costs of £300 and a £240 Victim Surcharge.

Last month another man was fined at the same court for refusing to provide his pin at Luton Airport.
