Millions of people across the UK saw the most significant solar eclipse in 27 years today, August 12 2026.
It was the most complete eclipse of the Sun by the Moon in UK skies since the total eclipse of 1999, with some across Europe witnessing full darkness of a total eclipse.

At about 5:50pm BST, the first images of the solar eclipse came in from Iceland, where about an hour before the country would it experienced complete darkness of totality.

In the UK the first glimpse came from about 6:20pm in Cornwall.
UK News and Investigations viewed the spectacle from Lowestoft, Suffolk, where by 7:11pm nearly 90% of the Sun was covered, leading to a a chorus of frantic seagulls and a dwindling hue of ambient light.

Above the eclipse is seen through the leaves on the shadow of a Buddleia bush.
The next highly anticipated total solar eclipse in the UK will not occur until September 23, 2090.
