EXCLUSIVE: Shock moment London gang member is repeatedly stabbed in car in broad daylight as 'Capital's knife crime epidemic attack' caught on CCTV

THIS is the shocking moment a man repeatedly stabbed a gang member in a car with a large knife as one of London's knife crime epidemic broad daylight attacks was caught on CCTV.

Mehmet Bakac, 23, is seen to reign 13 blows with the blade on "defenceless" Dylan Audrain-Chanthalangsy through the open driver's window of the Ford Focus in an attack captured on CCTV and shown to the jury at the Old Bailey.

The victim sustained six wounds to his chest, back, forearm and knee and a suspected collapsed lung as he tried to defend himself.

Miraculously, he was able to escape the car and flee before sustaining any more injuries.

But, he needed four blood transfusions in hospital before being discharged.

Bakac admitted to carrying out the attack and pleaded guilty to GBH with intent and possession of a bladed article at the Old Bailey on January 24 this year.

He was on police bail at the time of the attack after being found in a vehicle containing a knife just a month earlier.

Today, a jury cleared him of attempted murder, after Bakac (above) insisted he did not intend to kill Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy and was only acting through fear after he was previously stabbed by members of the street gang the victim was a member of.

Bakac launched the attack on Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy, a member of the north London street gang "Manor House Gang", at just before 8pm outside a Chinese takeaway in Oldhill Street, Hackney, on July 21 2024.

The prosecution was launched, despite any cooperation from the victim, due to the clarity of the CCTV and Bakac admitting it was him who was caught on camera.

Prosecuting, Simon Sterling, told the court: "The offence, a violent attack with a machete on a defenceless person sitting in a car, took place on 21st July 2024.

"Despite suffering from significant injuries, the victim in this matter, Dylan Audrain-Chanthalangsy, has from the outset refused to cooperate with the police.

"He has declined to provide a witness statement or any other assistance. Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy is an associate of the Manor House Gang based in N16.

"You may conclude that the decision not to support the police or prosecution arises from a misplaced belief that those involved in criminality should not be seen to cooperate in the prosecution of others involved in criminal behaviour."

The prosecution case was that Bakac planned to attack Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy and intended to kill him, in a "gang-related revenge attack," although the court heard there was no evidence the defendant was in any gang.

Mr Stirling added: "Mr Bakac appeared to have foreknowledge of Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy’s imminent arrival at the location where the attack took place. He made his way there deliberately to await Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy’s arrival and had brought with him a lethal weapon capable of killing or inflicting life-threatening injury.

"The motive cannot be established firmly, but whether it was prompted by rivalries within the area or in pursuit of revenge for some prior event by the victim directed towards the defendant or his friends is not clear. What is clear is that the defendant armed himself with a machete or long-bladed knife.

"When he saw Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy sitting in the driver’s seat of the car he used it to launch an unprovoked and murderous attack on him through the open driver’s window. The prosecution say he intended to kill him when he did so, not simply that he intended really serious harm, which he has admitted.

"He repeatedly and insistently inflicted some 13 blows with a machete or long-bladed knife directed at an individual sitting in a small, confined space from which he had difficulty escaping. A number of blows were aimed at his head and chest area.

"It was only by good fortune that Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy managed to escape from the vehicle, meaning that the injuries he sustained were not more serious or life threatening.'

Bakac is seen fleeing, with the blade still in hand in the CCTV.

Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy was then driven by friends in the car to Homerton Hospital, where he collapsed to the floor in the foyer, before being later transferred for treatment to Royal London Hospital.

He spent four days in hospital before being discharged.

The prosecution said the CCTV showed that Bakac was waiting ahead of the arrival of the car and pounced as soon as it arrived.

Mr Sterling said: "(Bakac) can be seen surreptitiously holding the machete/knife inside his jumper. He is looking around.

"The initial CCTV footage shows Bakac walking up Oldhill Street away from the camera. He meets an unidentified male by a black bin towards the top of Oldhill Street. Bakac clearly knows this male as he stops to speak to him and the pair then walk back in the

direction of the camera.

"Bakac then enters the Chinese takeaway. He comes out soon after and then waits outside where he is joined by the unidentified male who has accompanied him and another man. All three go back into the Chinese restaurant.

"Approximately two minutes later a black Ford Focus driven by Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy pulls up near the Chinese takeaway. Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy opens the driver’s door and gets out, looking in the direction of the takeaway where the defendant is still inside. The Crown says that is not mere coincidence.

"Almost immediately, the defendant approaches the driver’s door running from the takeaway. Seeing that Bakac is armed, Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy gets back into his vehicle to protect himself."

Police search dogs were used but no weapon was ever found.

Bakac was arrested 5am August 20 2024 at his home address in Stamford Road, Tottenham, after he threw a mobile phone out of his bedroom window, which was later found.

He made no comment in the interview.

Defending Bakac, Warwick Aleeson, said the defendant suffered with autism spectrum disorder and also PTSD after a previous stabbing.

He said Bakac had started to carry a knife for his own protection after being stabbed by a member of the gang in 2022.

The court heard that on September 1 that year Bakac was stabbed in the arm after he was pursued by a group of males while on his bike in Victoria Road, Tottenham, but refused to cooperate with police

It also heard that Bakac was convicted of possession of a bladed article in November 2018 after he was seen to discard a large bayonet style knife in a sheath.

He was also convicted in 2019 of robbing two males at knifepoint of their mobile telephone and belongings on December 20 2018 outside Sainsbury's, in Stratford, east London.

Mr Aleeson, told the court Bakac was not a member of a gang and was terrified of Mr Audrain-Chanthalangsy and associate Eugene Kessie, who was also in the car on the day of the attack.

He said members of the Manor House Gang "are known to be involved in drugs and weapons and violence".

The court heard that on September 6 2019, whilst travelling on a bus, Dylan Audrain- Chathanlangsy stabbed another male on a bus in Manor House, resulting in a conviction for wounding with intent and possession of an offensive weapon in public.

On March 2 2021, Mr Audrain-Chathanlangsy was travelling in a cab along with a Manor House Gang associate when police stopped the vehicle and found a 'slam gun' type shotgun along with two shotgun cartridges.

Both males were arrested.

On July 18 2023 after a welfare call was made to police the then home address of Mr Audrain-Chathanlangsy was searched and a large bladed Rambo-style was found and seized. In another incident on February 12 2024, a vehicle was stopped by police which contained Mr Audrain-Chathanlangsy along with another male who is an associate of the gang. A third male fled from the vehicle and was found to be in possession of a large bladed knife.

On April 24 2024, Mr Audrain-Chathanlangsy was arrested after a fight with a male who lived in their then accommodation.

A baseball bat was used and the other man's arm was broken, the court heard.

The court heard that Mr Kessie had been arrested a number of times for incidents concerning class A drugs and bladed articles from 2021 to 2024.

Mr Aleeson said Bakac had lived in fear of Mr Audrain-Chathanlangsy and his gang due to the previous attack and their fearsome reputation and had panicked during a flashback to the earlier attack.

Bakac gave evidence to the court and insisted the attack was not pre-planned and he had the weapon on him due to previous attacks.

He told the court he panicked after seeing the car and attacked first as he feared he would otherwise be set upon.

He repeatedly said: "I did not intend to kill."

Mr Aleeson said he was truly remorseful for the attack.

The court heard he is still under police investigation for the possession of a knife offence on June 21 2024.

Sentencing him to a total of four years and six months in prison for both offences, Judge Anthony Leonard KC, said: "You caused grave injuries and have previous convictions for possessing a knife and threatening to use a knife in a robbery.

"The offending is against the background of the man you stabbed being a member of the Manor House Gang and you lived in close proximity to the gang, who you had history with after being stabbed in 2022.

"I do not accept that the arrival of (the victim) in the car with at least one other member of the gang was by complete chance.

"You went straight to confront him and stabbed him six times all over his body."
