Police appeal after driver fails to stop after accident that led to death of motorcyclist at Whalebone Lane A12 junction Chadwell Heath

POLICE are seeking the driver of a BMW after they allegedly failed to stop after being in a fatal collision with a motorbike.

Despite best efforts of ambulance crews the 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene yesterday evening, Sunday, July 19 2026.

The emergency services were at the scene of the accident at the junction of Whalebone Lane with the A12 Eastern Avenue at Chadwell Heath, east London at 10:30pm.

According to onlookers a forensic tent was placed over the male rider and a police helicopter was up searching for the driver. Two drones were also seen up over the scene.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for information following a fatal crash in Whalebone Lane, Romford.

"Police were called to the A12 - Whalebone Lane, Romford - on Sunday 19, July at 21:20hrs following reports of a collision involving a car and a motorbike. Officers attended alongside the London Ambulance Service, London's Air Ambulance and London Fire Brigade.

"Paramedics treated a 28-year-old man, the motorcyclist, but despite best efforts he died at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed are being supported by specialist officers.

"The driver of the car fled the scene on foot. Officers are working at pace to locate him. No arrests have been made at this time."

Detective Chief Inspector James Beck, from the Met's Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "Our thoughts are first and foremost with the victim's family and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

"Officers are working quickly to find the driver of the vehicle and are asking the public - particularly those with doorbell or dashcam footage - to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 9.20pm on Sunday 19 July to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Whalebone Lane North and Eastern Avenue West, Romford.

“We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars, an incident response officer and a clinical team manager. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

“Our first paramedics arrived in two minutes.

“Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a patient was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A London Fire Service spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a road traffic collision on Whalebone Lane North in Romford.

"The collision involved a car and a motorcycle. Sadly, one man was declared dead at the scene.

"The Brigade was called at 2129. Two fire engines and two Fire Rescue Units from Dagenham, East Ham and Bethnal Green fire stations attended the scene."

The emergency services have been contacted for further details and this report will be updated.
