Police called to Tesco after security guard injured 'stopping shoplifter'


POLICE were called to a busy Tesco store after a security guard was reportedly assaulted as they tried to stop a suspected shoplifter.

The drama unfolded at the branch in Church Langley, Harlow, Essex, on Monday, August 21 2023 at about 4:50pm.

Two police cars were seen on blue lights outside the store with officers inside, while one viewed CCTV at the security stand.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "We responded to reports of a disturbance at a Tesco store in Church Langley Way, Harlow, shortly before 4.50pm on Monday 21 August.

“It was reported a security guard was assaulted while attempting to stop a person they suspected was shoplifting.

“The victim suffered injuries to his arm and declined further treatment.

“Alcohol worth a three-figure sum was taken from the store.

“We are continuing to investigate this incident and need anyone with information to come forward.
