Murder detectives investigate after man's burning body is found in street

A MAN was found on fire in the street by a dog walker this morning.

Police are treating the death as unexplained but the murder squad is investigating.

Locals fear he may have been set on fire while he was alive.

Tania Marszalek, 39, who lives on Commonside East, Mitcham, south London, where the body was found at just after 6am, said: “I saw a police officer tying a red tape cordon to the wing mirror of my car.

“I immediately wanted to know what was going on and I asked the officers who didn’t tell me much at all.

"There are people on the street who are saying a guy was found at the end of the road on fire after being mutilated, he was still alive when he was found."

A Met Police spokesman said: "Police were called to Commonside East, Mitcham, at 6.12am to reports of a man on fire.

"Officers attended and the body of a man was found. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the man's identity.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained. A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course."

The investigation is being led by homicide detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
