A MAJOR police search in woods in the Greenwich area is for a weapon, the Met Police has confirmed.

The search has been taking place inside a cordoned off area at Falconwood Field, off Rochester Way in Greenwich, south east London, for the last four days.

The Met Police initially would not release any information about the nature of the search, leading to much online speculation on the Nextdoor app.

The News Shopper newspaper website reported this morning (November 8 2026) that the force had still not released the nature of the search, but it was reported by Crime Scene Images London (CSIL) that the Met had now said they were looking for a weapon, without giving any details of any incident it was linked to.

In a YouTube video CSIL released footage of several officers involved in the search.

There are reports of dogs being involved.

Residents had earlier posted concerns, after seeing the ongoing police presence, that it could be a serious incident such as a rape, search for a body, or linked to a recent shooting.

Detectives launched a murder investigation on November 4 after Terry Dearsley, 32, died after he was shot and wounded in a car in Frances Street, Woolwich at 8:09pm on Thursday, 22 October.

There were also theories it could be linked to a separate stabbing on October 31 when a teenager was stabbed and had his e-bike stolen.

However, the Met has said it is not connected to any of these specific incidents or scenarios.

However, it has confirmed it is in relation to a search for a weapon in connection with an unconnected incident of which it has not released details.

The force was asked for details and for the type of weapon being sought, but it would not confirm any further details.
