THE Met Police's latest murder probe concerns a fatal shooting of someone from the north London Turkish community, it emerged today.

The Met is continuing to appeal for information following the murder of the man in Stoke Newington.

While formal identification awaits, detectives have named the victim as Erdal Ozmen, aged 45.

Police were called at 12:18am on Tuesday, 5 August to Dynevor Road, N16 to reports of gunshots.

Officers arrived and found Erdal suffering with gunshot injuries. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Erdal’s family continue to receive support from specialist officers.

A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, who is leading the investigation, said: “We continue to appeal for witnesses to come forward following the fatal shooting of Erdal. He was a father-of-one and was deeply loved by his family.

“Today, we are asking the public for assistance. Were you in the Dynevor Road area late on Monday night into early Tuesday morning? Did you see anyone acting out of the ordinary? Did you hear anything at all which perhaps seemed unusual - maybe people shouting, or a loud vehicle?

"The smallest piece of information could play a significant role in our investigation.”

At this stage, the motive for the murder remains unclear and no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 0208 345 3775 quoting CAD 108/5AUG, or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to give information 100 per cent anonymously.

Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads policing for the area, said: “Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to the tragic death of this man.

“We understand this incident will cause concern within the Stoke Newington community, however we do believe this to be an isolated incident at this stage of the investigation with no wider risk to the general public.

“Residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area, along with a crime scene, as we carry out our enquiries. We thank them for their patience and co-operation at this time.

“We urge anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information that could assist us, to come forward as soon as possible.”

In May 2024 a nine-year-old girl was left with life-changing injuries after she was caught in the crossfire of a shooting thought to stem from rivalries between Turkish communities in Dalston.
