EXCLUSIVE PICTURES: Moped rider critical after collision with car which 'failed to stop for police'

A MOPED rider is in a critical condition after being in collission with a car which had allegedly failed to stop for police.

A major police and emergency services incident was underway in Gants Hill, near Ilford, east London, after the accident which also involved an Audi car and the moped.

A man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a search involving police dogs.

A Met Police spokesman said: "At approximately 3:30pm on Monday, 26 June a vehicle that had failed to stop for police was in collision with a moped in Cranbrook Road at the junction of Martley Drive, Ilford.

"London Ambulance Service attended and the rider of the moped – a man aged in his 20s – was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital; he remains in a critical condition.

"The driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving; he is not seriously injured and will be taken into police custody.

"No reports of any other injuries.

"Road closures remain in place.

"Enquiries into the circumstances continue."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 3.30pm today (26 June 2023) to reports of a road traffic collision in Glenham Drive, Ilford.

“We sent an ambulance crew, two paramedics in fast response cars, a paramedic on a motorcycle and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated a patient at the scene for pelvis and spinal injuries and took him, by road, to a major trauma centre as a priority.

"The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed as is routine."

Crowds formed as police with dogs were also seen in the area.

Officers investigating the collision are keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to, including any road users who may have captured the collision on dashcam.

According to a witness a man fled the scene but was later seen being arrested.
