THE Bondi Beach terror attackers, who shot at Jewish people celebrating Hanukkah, were a father and son, New South Wales Police have said.

In a press briefing it was confirmed the 50-year-old father was killed and the 24-year-old son is in hospital in a critical, but stable condition.

Sixteen people, including a ten-year-old girl have now died, while 42 other people, including at least three other children, remain in hospital.

Those killed range in age from 10 to 87, police said.

Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the deceased 50-year-old man was a licenced firearms holder, had six firearms registered to him and that six firearms were found on Bondi Beach.

Police said there had been no previous incidents regarding his licence.

"Two active improved devices" were also found at the scene and have since been rendered safe by police.

Two properties have also been searched by officers overnight in the western Sydney suburbs of Campsie and Bonnyrigg.

The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, said the shooting was “an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores”.

Among the dead is London-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, a father-of-five, 41, who was described by his cousin as as "vivacious, optimistic and full of energy and life".

It is Australia’s worst mass shooting in 29 years since the attacks at Port Arthur on Tasmania.

The attacks happened in the evening (Sydney time) today, Sunday December 14 2025.

The ambulance service of the state of New South Wales was called to Bondi, Australia’s best-known beach, at about 6:45 pm, in response to reports that multiple people had been shot, a spokeswoman said.

New South Wales police issued an alert asking people to stay away from the beach because of what they described as a “developing incident.”

Video, being shared on Whatsapp, shows one of the attackers grabbed by a member of the public from behind, who is seen to wrestle his gun from him.

But, the terrorist retreats and makes it back to a bridge where he regroups with the other attacker and gets another gun before shooting at people again.

Other video footage showed two people being detained.

The police initially said at about 7:30 pm that two people were in custody.

A Met Police spokesperson said: "At a time when London’s Jewish communities are coming together to begin the celebration of Hannukah, we know this attack will be the cause of not just terrible upset but also significant heightened concern about safety.

We were already working closely with partners, including the Community Security Trust, to provide an increased presence around synagogues and other community venues at this important time.

While there is no information to suggest any link between the attack in Sydney and the threat level in London, this morning we are stepping up our police presence, carrying out additional community patrols and engaging with the Jewish community to understand what more we can do in the coming hours and days.

We always encourage the public to be vigilant at events and in public places. If you see anything suspicious, trust your instincts and tell us.

In an emergency, always call 999."
