Alleged international crime boss Daniel Kinahan remanded into custody in Irish jail until October after brief hearing at Special Criminal Court in Dublin after extradition from Dubai

ALLEGED international crime boss Daniel Kinahan has been remanded in custody until October 5 after a brief hearing at Dublin's Special Criminal Court this evening.

Kinahan was brought to the non-jury court at about 8pm after landing in Ireland just before 6:30pm.

The Irish Government Air Corps jet left Al Maktoum International Airport with Kinahan on board at about 10:30am Irish time and landed at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Co Dublin, just after 6.30pm, where there was a large Garda presence, several emergency response vehicles and police helicopters above.

He was arrested upon arrival to be taken directly to the Special Criminal Court.

The Special Criminal Court sits with three judges and no jury to deal with the most serious crimes, such as those involving paramilitary and organised crime.

During a hearing, before judges Patrick McGrath, Sarah Berkeley and Fiona Lydon, in courtroom 11 that lasted about 13 minutes Kinahan was seated in the dock in a black hoodie with glasses.

Kinahan, who was not legally represented, is accused of directing the activities of a criminal organisation between October 2015 and April 2017.

After the hearing he was taken from the court in a vehicle with a convoy of blacked-out police vehicles and it is believed he will be taken to the maximum-security Portlaoise Prison.

The court was full of reporters and also senior police.

Ahead of the hearing, after Kinahan landed, the Gardaí issued a statement saying a male, in his late 40s, has been arrested and charged in relation to serious organised crime offences.

It said: "The male was arrested in the United Arab Emirates on foot of an arrest warrant issued by the Irish Courts. He was extradited following a judicial process there. His extradition was in accordance with the bi-lateral agreement on extradition between Ireland and United Arab Emirates. The extradition was facilitated by the logistical support of the Irish Air Corps.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly said: "This arrest shows our determination, along with our international policing partners including Dubai Police, to target transnational organised crime groups.

"It also shows the value of our relationship with the authorities in the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Justice at judicial level, and on a police-to-police basis.

"This relationship has been supported by the Irish Government's Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade."

Daniel Kinahan has denied being an organised crime boss.
