Airbnb in crackdown on party hiring after rowdy revellers attack police

ONLINE rental firm Airbnb has vowed to crackdown on people hiring its venues for rowdy parties after revellers at a house party that got out of hand attacked police.

Officers were attacked as they ejected up to 200 revellers from a house party that got out of hand in the home rented through the firm.

The rowdy gathering in Levenshulme, Manchester, last Friday night upset neighbours who complained to police and Airbnb following reports of drunks and excessive noise.

Police were pelted with objects as they came to break up the party at 10.30pm.

No arrests were made but Greater Manchester Police wants to hear from anyone who attended the party and to identify people from CCTV.

Detective Constable Chris Henderson said: "Not only had the partygoers duped the home owner into believing there would be far fewer people at the property, the party got out of hand.

"They terrified local residents in their own homes, then reacted with violence towards police officers when they attempted to clear the party.

"This behaviour is simply unacceptable.

"We are currently investigating crimes of violent disorder and will be reviewing CCTV to identify those involved.

"We would like to hear from anyone who has any information that can help police as we attempt to bring those responsible to justice."

Rob Summers used Twitter to report his concerns about the party to Airbnb, saying it had "got silly."

An Airbnb spokeswoman said: "We have zero tolerance for this type of behaviour, have removed the guest from our platform and are providing the host with our full support. There have been over half a billion guest arrivals on Airbnb and, with two million people staying on Airbnb on any given night, incidents like this are incredibly rare.

"We work closely with police forces on criminal behaviour, and assist them with their investigation in any way we can."
